CHAPTER I / THE HARBOUR

Where an entire
fleet went down.

In 1919, the interned German High Seas Fleet was scuttled in Scapa Flow. Most ships were raised and scrapped in the decades that followed. Seven great warships still survive underwater.

There are other histories here too: the loss of HMS Vanguard, the torpedoing of HMS Royal Oak, defensive blockships, working boats and even the remains of the extraordinary salvage operations. Not every ship in this collection remains intact on the seabed.

More than
metal on the seabed.

HMS Royal Oak is a protected war grave. This story is about the 834 people who died and the families who carried their loss — not about exploring or disturbing a resting place.
